Salt Lake City to Bryce Canyon

What an amazing day. Started with pancakes for breakfast with bacon and eggs. We are into perfect weather for sightseeing and seeing amazing things we are. Our day started with a visit to Temple Square to see the Mormon temple. We're not Mormon, but we couldn't go to Salt Lake City without seeing it's number 1 tourist attraction. The Temple Square grounds were imaculate and the temple was amazing.

The best view is definitely from the front of the temple.

The family in front of Mormon HQ... I think.

After leaving Temple Square it was four hours on the road to Bryce Canyon National Park. For the most part the scenery was nice but after we got off the main highway it got interesting. We kept seeing signs with a cow on it but there was nary a cow in sight. Suddenly, up ahead we saw a herd of cattle being pushed along by ranchers using four wheelers and a golf cart to drive them through town.

I thought this one might come up to the window. After the herd passed traffic continued on as normal.

A little further down the road we drove through Red Canyon. Even though the colors were amazing it was nothing compared to the beauty of Bryce. We first stopped at Bryce point which gave a nice view of the canyon but didn't give easy access to the canyon floor. After a quick trip to the internet (with a 3G connection???) we found that Sunset Point was the place to go. I knew we were in the right place the moment I saw the canyon. This was the place I remembered from my youth. Amazing colors and formations in every direction you look. It was also accessible by a pathway that let you hike right through the middle. Incredible.

View from the top.

View from half way down.

Family photo in the canyon. It was a little bit after this point that we realized we were near the bottom of the canyon and still had 3G coverage on our phones. Suddenly, Ksenia was on the phone with Nana and Kaleb was calling his friends. James was the only friend who answered and he was in a movie theater at the time. Pretty amazing coverage for AT&T.

Here are the girls on the way out. I don't think people would hike as far into canyons if they had to go uphill first.

We couldn't get a reservation at the national park so we settled for Bryce Canyon Pines hotel and campground. It is a dive and I don't recommend it. Luckily it is only for one night. I don't recommend it for anyone. Ruby's looked much nicer but would be 20 bucks more for a night.

Tomorrow it's off to the Grand Canyon. Can't wait...

  1. We laughed when we read "I don't think people would hike as far into canyons if they had to go uphill first". Been there done that!!!

My montra "I want to do the uphill hiking going in and the down hill coming out"

We give a lot of thought before hiking 'down' first. Thanks for the laugh

  2. We have definitely gotten our exercise so far this trip. Coming out of Bryce was a good challenge to be sure. When we go to Grand Canyon no one was really asking to go for a hike :)
