Cajuns, Thunder and Gators Oh My!!!

Woke up this morning to a Louisiana thunder storm which was short but but intense. The rain came hard and heavy with some gusts of wind but before you knew it it was over. After we woke up we made reservations for the Cajun Encounters Swamp Tour. Our reservation was for noon so we packed up the trailer and headed out. When we arrived we were greeted with a great atmosphere and cute gift shop. We were a little early so we had time to make a sandwich for lunch and hang out for a bit. We spent quite a bit of time in the gift shop because it was air conditioned but didn't buy anything. Once we were called down for our tour we found out the kids would have to wear life jackets. All of them. They all three handled it well but Kaleb was a little upset about it. The law is 17 and under apparently and they face a $1500 fine if a kid is caught without one. Once all the kids were safe we headed to the boat and found our spots. We were in the back next to the driver so we got a front row seat to almost everything. The first thing we did was see an authentic Cajun community. These were folks that lived on a part of the river that is only accessible by water. It was interesting but felt weird that we were looking at people and their homes as tourist attraction. After that we went into the swampy portion of the tour. Here our tour guide Garret led us into the main swamp area and showed us several animals like squirrels, brown raccoons, cotton mouth snakes, baby blue heron, big blue heron and of course alligators. The tour guide stopped the tour in the middle of the swamp and brought out a baby alligator for us to hold. I was surprised how it felt to hold. I was expecting slimy and it was dry and easy to hold. Cute as a button too.

Don't steal my ladies leg.

Garrett the excellent tour guide. Good sense of humor and very knowledgeable.

After we finished the tour we headed to Montgomery for the night. On the way we stopped by Walmart and while we were there we picked up an air conditioner. We have taken the screen and rigged up a system to vent the AC through the door. It's a pain going in and out but beats sweating to death.

Much more comfortable tonight. The AC is a real blessing. Tomorrow is out to see Montgomery and then off to Atlanta.
